Subdivision landscaping is done fast and to a plan, and the plan rarely accounts for what a tree does at maturity. Albany has thousands of young trees sitting two metres from a wall, under an eave, or directly over a shared driveway. Right now they look fine. In eight years they are a removal job.

Albany sits high and open, and the westerlies get a clean run at it. Trees here take more wind load than the sheltered eastern bays, which shows up as one-sided canopies, torn unions and the occasional whole tree over in saturated winter ground. Thinning a dense canopy so wind passes through it, rather than pushing on it like a sail, is often more useful than reducing its height.
