The recurring Milford job is a good tree that has simply run out of room. Liquidambar over the roofline, a camphor with roots into the drains, a magnolia that has swallowed the front window, or a row of conifers planted as a screen that are now twelve metres tall and blocking the neighbour's sun.

The answer is rarely removal. A properly executed crown reduction takes the pressure off the house, gets the light back, and keeps a tree that would take thirty years to replace. Where a tree genuinely has to go, it goes — but you will get the honest version of which one yours is.

Sections backing onto the Wairau estuary and the reserve have their own considerations. Riparian margins can carry vegetation rules, the ground is soft and gets softer in winter, and mangrove and coastal edge planting is generally not yours to clear. Work near that boundary is worth checking before it is booked.

The estuary also funnels wind. Trees along that edge take more load than they look like they should, and they are the ones that shed limbs in a hard blow.

Milford has a lot of hedge. Griselinia and photinia along most boundaries, older conifer hedging on the bigger sections, and a fair amount of it well past the height anyone can safely do off a ladder. Bringing an overgrown hedge back is species-dependent — broadleaf will reshoot from bare wood, conifers largely will not — and getting that call right is the whole job.
