Honest advice on what your tree actually needs
What makes North Shore tree work its own thing
The Shore is not one landscape. Along the coast — Takapuna, Milford, Devonport, the Bays — you have salt wind, thin soils over shell and sand, and a lot of protected coastal pōhutukawa that people assume they can cut and mostly cannot. Inland at Glenfield, Wairau Valley and Sunnynook you have flatter 1960s and 70s sections with mature liquidambar, gum and camphor that were planted small and are now enormous. And through Birkenhead, Beach Haven, Chelsea and Kaipātiki you have steep bush gullies with genuine native remnants, difficult access, and vegetation rules that actually apply.
Access is the other Shore constant. Half the housing stock is on cross-lease or infill sites reached down a shared driveway with a 2.4 metre gate. That is a real constraint on what gear can get in, and it is why a quote from someone who has actually stood on your section is worth more than a phone estimate.
The trees you find here
Pōhutukawa dominate the coastal edge and are the single most common subject of a Shore tree conversation. Many along reserves and esplanades are protected, on public land, or both, and the ones on private sections still need pruning that respects how the species compartmentalises wounds — they do not tolerate careless cuts.
Beyond that: liquidambar (beautiful, and enormous, and always planted three metres from a house), gum species that shed limbs without warning, Norfolk pine along the older beachfront streets, camphor laurel, magnolia, tītoki, pūriri, and mature privet and woolly nightshade through every neglected gully. Griselinia and photinia hedging are on virtually every boundary.
Before you book: check whether your tree is protected
Blanket protection for urban trees was removed some years ago, so most trees on a private Shore section can be worked on without consent. But protection still applies to Scheduled Notable Trees, anything within a Significant Ecological Area, trees in the road reserve or on council land, and vegetation caught by heritage, riparian or coastal overlays — and the Shore has plenty of all four, particularly around Devonport, the bush gullies and the coastal esplanades.
Auckland Council's GeoMaps will show you what applies to your address in a couple of minutes. Dave will flag anything obvious at the quote, but confirming the rules for your property is the owner's call, and the rules do get updated.

Questions
North Shore — common questions
Which North Shore suburbs do you cover?
All of them — Devonport, Takapuna, Milford, Northcote, Birkenhead, Beach Haven, Glenfield, Greenhithe, Albany, and up the East Coast Bays through Mairangi Bay, Browns Bay and Torbay. If your suburb is not listed on the site, ring and ask; it is almost certainly covered.
Can you get machinery into a back section down a shared driveway?
Usually. Narrow-access stump grinders fit through a standard 750mm gate, and chippers can be sited on the drive with material carried to them. Where nothing can get in, it is hand-carried — slower, and priced accordingly, which is exactly why the quote happens on site.
Do you charge for a quote on the North Shore?
No. Quotes are free, on site, and there is no obligation to book.
