Tree Removal in Auckland

There is a real difference between felling a tree in an open paddock and dismantling one three metres from a bedroom window. Most Auckland sections are the second kind. Where there is no safe fall zone, the tree comes down in sections: a climber works up through the canopy, removes limbs in controlled pieces, and lowers them on rigging lines rather than dropping them. It is slower and it is why removal quotes vary so much between one tree and the next.

Every job starts with a look at what is underneath and around the tree — glasshouse, deck, fence line, neighbour's roof, the power feed to the house, the septic field, the retaining wall. Those constraints set the method, and the method sets the price. Anyone quoting a tree removal over the phone without seeing it is guessing.

Work close to live conductors is not a DIY job and it is not a job for a general landscaper. If your tree is anywhere near the lines running to your house or down the street, say so when you call — there are minimum approach distances that apply, and in some cases the lines need to be shut down or covered before work can start, which has to be arranged with the network operator in advance.

Boundary trees are the other common complication. If the trunk straddles a boundary it is legally shared, and both owners need to agree before it is removed. If it is clearly your neighbour's tree but overhanging your section, your rights are narrower than most people expect. It is worth a conversation before it becomes a dispute, and Dave will tell you honestly where you stand rather than quietly taking the job.

Removal includes taking the wood away. Branches are chipped on site where there is access for the chipper, trunk wood is cut down and removed, and the ground is raked off so you are not finding twigs in the lawn for a month. If you want the mulch left for garden beds or the trunk rounds kept for firewood, say so — it costs less than carting it away and plenty of people want it.

The stump is a separate decision. A flush cut leaves a low stump you can live with or plant around; grinding removes it properly so you can re-turf, pave or replant in the same spot. Most people who are removing a tree to reclaim the space want it ground out.
