Arborist on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula

Most coastal suburbs get their weather from one quarter. The peninsula gets it from both, which means trees here rarely develop the neat leaning form of a single-aspect coastal site — they get thrashed, thin out on the exposed faces, and carry a lot of dead in the upper canopy.

Thinning is generally the most useful intervention. A dense canopy on this peninsula behaves like a sail; opening it up so wind passes through reduces the load on the trunk and root plate far more effectively than taking height off the top.

The peninsula sees more storm work per property than anywhere else in the service area. Whole trees over in wet ground, limbs torn out at unions, and branches hung up in canopies waiting to drop. Getting deadwood out and canopies thinned before winter is materially cheaper than dealing with what falls.

The full length of the peninsula is covered — Stanmore Bay, Manly, Tindalls, Army Bay, Gulf Harbour and Matakatia. Because it is a long drive out and back, grouping work into one visit rather than several is worth doing.
