From beachfront to gully head
Front streets get the full salt exposure and the associated one-sided growth. A few hundred metres inland the gullies provide real shelter, and trees there grow far larger than their coastal neighbours — which is where the reductions and roof-clearance work comes from.
At the top of the gullies the sections steepen and back onto reserve. Those get the same treatment as Birkenhead: climbed, rigged, and carried out.
Established gardens, mature specimens
The mid-century Mairangi Bay gardens hold some genuinely good trees — pūriri, tītoki, magnolia, liquidambar, jacaranda and mature pōhutukawa on the seaward streets. How do I know if a tree is likely to come down in a storm?
The warning signs are a lean that has changed, soil lifting or cracking on one side of the base, fungal brackets at the trunk base, dead limbs in the canopy, and a history of shedding. Trees on wet gully banks are at higher risk in a wet winter. If you are seeing any of those, get it looked at before the next front.
Do you deadwood large trees?
Yes, and on mature specimens it is often the most useful thing that can be done — it removes what would otherwise fall on someone without touching the tree's shape or health.
