Large parts of Devonport sit inside character and heritage overlays, and there is a higher concentration of Scheduled Notable Trees here than almost anywhere on the Shore — mature Norfolk pines, pōhutukawa, oaks and Moreton Bay figs that predate most of the houses.

That does not mean nothing can be done. It means the rules genuinely apply, and checking your address on Auckland Council's GeoMaps before planning work is worth the ten minutes. Dave will raise anything that looks scheduled or overlay-affected at the quote rather than finding out afterwards.

The classic Devonport property is a villa hard to the boundary with a 900mm path down one side, a fence at the back, and a large tree behind the house. Nothing wheeled is getting in. Everything is climbed, rigged down in small pieces, and carried out through the house-side path or over the fence.

It is slow, it is skilled, and it is completely routine — it just cannot be quoted from a photo.

Devonport is nearly surrounded by water and everything growing here is dealing with salt. Norfolk pines along the waterfront handle it; most garden species do not, and end up with burnt foliage on the seaward face and one-sided growth. Rebalancing that with a reduction on the sheltered side works far better than trimming the damaged face.

Trees on the reserves at Mt Victoria, North Head and along the esplanades are council trees. If it is on the reserve side of your fence, that is a call to Auckland Council rather than to an arborist.
