The original Beach Haven subdivision came with sections far larger than anything built today, and they were planted accordingly. Sixty years on there are mature gums, pines, liquidambar and macrocarpa standing over houses that were designed for a much smaller garden.

There is usually room here to work properly — access is better than Birkenhead and the drop zones are real — which makes removals and large reductions more economical than the equivalent job on a tight section elsewhere on the Shore.

Properties running down to the Kaipātiki and Rangitopuni arms hit coastal marine boundaries, riparian margins and mangrove edge. Vegetation rules apply along there and the ground is soft — winter access to the bottom of those sections is genuinely limited.

Trees on that edge also take the full wind funnel up the harbour and are disproportionately represented in storm work.

The single most common Beach Haven job is a back section that has been left long enough to grow a privet and woolly nightshade thicket, with moth plant through the lot. Clearing it back is straightforward; keeping it clear means dealing with the stumps at the same time, because all of those species resprout hard from a cut stump.
