Eucalypts were planted everywhere through Glenfield and Wairau Valley in the seventies, and they have grown enormous. The issue with mature gum on a suburban section is not usually the whole tree failing — it is limb drop. Gums shed large branches in still, hot weather with no warning at all, which is exactly when people are underneath them.

Where a gum is over a house, a driveway or a play area, the realistic options are a substantial reduction to lower the risk profile, or removal. Both are honest answers depending on the tree, and you will be told which one it actually is rather than which one is the bigger invoice.

Glenfield backs onto the Kaipātiki gully network, and sections that run down into it are a different job entirely — steep, damp, full of self-sown privet and woolly nightshade, and often inside a Significant Ecological Area where vegetation removal is not automatic. Clearing weed species out of a gully is usually fine and genuinely worth doing; taking out native canopy generally is not.
